Solgar's
Herbs are back and better than ever!
At Solgar the purity of products is never compromised
and over and above many aspects of herbal production
there are a few areas that Solgar applies special
importance to - Harvesting Procedures - Non-Irradiation
- Plant Identification - Quality Control -
Harvesting
Solgar only uses herbal raw materials from plants
that are either cultivated in an enviroment free
from pesticide sprays or chemical fertilisers or
from plants that are wildcrafted. Solgar buyers
travel the world to find the finest raw herbs available,
but as very few areas of the world have official
certification schemes for organic growing, we do
not claim most of our herbs as being 'certified
organic'.
Solgar's herbs are sustainably harvested
as herbs picked in these areas ar replenished so
they are not depleting stocks of wild herbs growing
in their natural herbs growing in their natural
enviroments.Solgar avoids exhausting levels of endangered
herbs such as Goldenseal, and ensures a sustainable
future for these important plants despite the increasing
popularity of herbal supplementation.
Non-Irradiated
Irradiation is a method often used for killing harmful
microbes such as bacteria, parasites and fungi that
can proliferate in herbal materials. It involves
exposing products to a controlled dose of gamma
radiation in order to eliminate microbial contamination.
Solgar has gone to extreme lenghts
to make sure that all of its herbal products are
Non-Irradiated. Working closely with the raw material
suppliers, Solgar has devised unique methods utilising
advanced technologies and uniquely engineered apparatus
that guarantee herbal raw materials that are completely
free of microbial contaminants. This has been achieved
without negatively affecting the herbal actives
or leaving any residues, as is often the case with
other treatment methods. So serious is Solgar's
commitment to non-irradiated herbs, many batches
of herbal raw materials were rejected until the
standards for purity were achieved. Seven additional
scientists were employed by Solgar's supply partners
to attain Solgar's quality standard for herbal materials.
Identification
& Quality Control
Solgar does not adopt he common practise of purchasing
herbal raw materials from suppliers in an already
powdered form, which aside from making it difficult
to know how old the raw material is, also makes
identification more difficult. Even if the whole
herb is present, identification should always involve
more than merely the look, taste or smell of the
plant, or taking the word of the supplier as to
its identity.
A Solgar, correct laboratory analysis
is undertaken, not only to ensure the correct identity,
but also to ensure that the herb is suffiently active
and that there are no contaminants in the raw material.
Solgar utilises stage-of-the-art analytical techniques
in its own laboratory, such as high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin layer chromatography
(TLC) and infrared and atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy.
Additional, and especially important for herbal
products, Solgar fully tests all herbal raw materials
for microbiological contamination in its own full-scale
microbiological laboratory.
